R.I.P. Sam

The little koala, Sam, survived the Australian Bush fires only to develop "ovarian cysts associated with chlamydia, an ailment that affects 50 percent of Australia's koala population" and die. Here is one of many articles about this little koala. I remember seeing the above photo while following the wildfire stories. It was a symbol of hope and also showed what animals were doing just to stay alive. The animal first fled the fire on second- and third-degree burned paws and then went against instinct to go up to a human a zillion times her size and drink. That said, I had no idea chlamydia was so common among koalas. Those whores.
